Question: How many African Elephants are living today?
According to the 2007 African Elephant Status Report put out by African Elephant Specialist group, people who
research elephants, there are currently over 550,000 elephants in Africa. Most of these are found in southern and
East Africa, though elephants also live in Central and West Africa. It is often difficult to know exactly how many
elephants there are because many elephants live in places that are not easy for researchers to access. Also,
elephants living in forests or other areas with lots of vegetation may hide and be missed when researchers are
conducting counts. The number above also does not include elephants in captivity.
